Old School SBC AFR 220's

Postby BOSSMAN on Tue Nov 10, 2009 6:37 am

Here is a very early design of the AFR 220's that belongs to Tom Tynan for his Econo Dragster. He brought them in for a good freshen up and to see what we can gain on porting them. The chamber is an old design that needs reshaped and the port needs some attention. After a good bead blasting I did my baseline flow test to see where everything was at and found the port to go turbulent (not real bad) at .600 lift. The results don't show horrible turbulence but the port sure sounded odd on my bench. :?

Stock AFR Chamber and Valve Job.

Performed a Custom Profile Valve Job and some nice radius cuts for the chamber transition.

Reshaped and blended the chamber in.

Flow results using a 4.155 bore / Ported #1 also has a BC on valve 2.08 / 1.60:
Lift_____Baseline________Ported #1___Gain(+)
.100--------51.25---------------70.26-------19.01
.200-------123.44-------------153.16-------29.72
.300-------181.72-------------219.36-------37.64
.400-------238.83-------------264.76-------25.93
.500-------271.92-------------289.30-------17.38
.600-------290.32-------------296.45--------6.13
.700-------291.34-------------300.54--------9.20
.800-------294.41-------------302.59--------8.18
Just roughing in the port now to see what direction I need to go. I tried a few things out and seemed to work well. Still need to fine tune it some more. I will post more soon.

Roughing in the Exhaust Ports, here is a port comparison. A fair amount of material removed for a better shape.
